Hack your way to entrepreneurial success! Sponsored and co-organised by Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd, RHBHacks is the first hackathon in River Hongbao's (RHB) 32-year history. The event brought together teams of budding student entrepreneurs from across the country to contest their business ideas in a highly competitive setting. Apart from the top 3 teams who have won their chances to sell their products or services at River Hongbao 2019, the "Most Technovative" and "Most Innovative" teams have also been rewarded for their creativity and ideas.
A valuable platform to cultivate the spirit of enterprise, creativity and risk-management among young Singaporeans, RHBHacks concluded with roaring success on 4 January 2019. From a total of 28 participating teams, 15 teams from Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, The Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, and other tertiary institutes were short-listed to compete in the hackathon.
After six hours of heated competition, the emerging teams - Huat Air Balloons, IADT, Clara_Nature, went through personal mentorship sessions with Mapletree's retail expert - Ms Joanna Lee, Director, Retail Management Systems to gear up for their final challenge – operating their businesses at River Hongbao 2019. Come down to RHB and check out what the young entrepreneurs have been cooking up for RHB 2019!
“The world is your oyster. Just like how an artist paints his canvas, unleash your creativity and design your own denim and totes this Chinese New Year!”
It all began quite ordinarily: Audrey and Zong Yue started off as classmates and FYP partners at Singapore Polytechnic, before they embarked on the denim journey with IADT (It’s A Denim Thing) last December. It was one of those impulsive moments, for Audrey. “One moment I was watching a Netflix series about a girl starting her own business and the next I was already brainstorming on starting my own.” Around the same time, her mom had bought a denim jacket which sparked her interest, and after some research, Audrey ventured into dabbling with denim garments. She met Zong Yue later on, who had many connections with outside networks, and from there IADT was birthed.
IADT allows you to design your own denim jacket, but that’s not all that it is. It’s denim DIY taken to a whole new level, with DIY screen-printing, vinyl printing and so much more! IADT brings to #RiverHongbao2019 a gift of creative freedom and expression, arriving in the form of a chance to design denim with applique décor and distressed rips – all to your individual taste and preference.
Although the preparation for RHBHacks was not smooth-sailing for the two final-year Entrepreneurship students, Team IADT emerged triumphant despite the many disagreements and fears that came with the challenges of operating a business in such a big-scale event. “The thing that kept us going even when things got tough, was the future that we aim to achieve for IADT. We pulled through as a team by making compromises whilst reminding each other that we are a team first and foremost.”

“Buy a balloon. Win a balloon. Gift someone else a balloon. Whatever you do, light up River Hongbao 2019 with us and it is for a good cause.”
An inseparable entrepreneurial duo in their final-year of studies at NTU Renaissance Engineering School, Heetesh and Wei Loong are the muscle and wits behind "Huat Air Balloons". This isn't the first time they are working together, and they agreed that it's their shared love for entrepreneurship and the joy of having a friend who enjoys doing things together, that makes the often lonely entrepreneurial journey that much more beautiful.
"Huat Air Balloons" is all set to light up #RiverHongbao2019 and add to the festive spirit and joy of Chinese New Year. You can either buy a LED balloon or alternatively choose to play games to win one! Compete with others to win the most balloons and be at the top of their live leaderboard.
“Tired of the mainstream CNY paper cuttings and decorations? Revolutionise CNY home décor with us and discover a whole new way of decorating your home this festive season!”
What began as a father’s hobby, grew into a humble family business and finally blossomed as one of the top three winning teams at RHBHacks to operate their businesses at the biggest CNY event of 2019.
Fronted by Samuel, the trio of three young lads hailing from Republic Polytechnic brought something different to Team Clara_Nature. Samuel, with the original business idea coming from his father, was the brain behind the entire winning proposal and presentation script. Zechariah, with his knack for making people laugh, nailed the comedic aspect of Clara_Nature’s presentation during the hackathon. Darin, with his rich experience in participating in competitions, was the reliable support that his teammates needed in the execution of the business plan.
Clara_Nature brings a touch of nature to the CNY festivity at River Hongbao 2019, with their CNY-inspired terrariums. There are many terrariums in Singapore, but what makes Clara_Nature stand out from the rest is simply how AFFORDABLE their terrariums are. Priced at just $8-$25 a pop, it sure makes unique and personalized CNY home décor accessible to all. Clara_Nature also takes pride in being environmentally-friendly, as their terrariums are made entirely of recycled materials like broken bulbs. “Basically, we take what people usually throw away and turn them into something beautiful.”
